Communication is very imperative because it enhances the interaction with the client, thereby creating a therapeutic relationship, characterized by an atmosphere of trust, believe, well-being of client. There are two main forms of communication, Verbal and non-verbal communication. A caregiver needs to comprehend these forms depending on the kind of the client that is attending to. For instance, a client with hearing problems or deaf may use non-verbal form of communication. A substantial communication skill makes it easier for social care and health practitioner to listen effectively and offer the most appropriate response to their client
There are several theories used in health and social care communication. Cognitive theory attempts to explain the thought process of an individual. The theory suggests that emotions determine human thoughts. It implies that learning is through observing the environment. Therefore, a person’s environment will have an impact on his or her life. The theory explains the interaction between the person and his environment. Thus, as a health practitioner and social care interact more with the client, the more communication is strong.
Another theory is the Humanistic theory. It examines the whole aspect of human life, and includes behaviors, which project the inner feelings and emotions of an individual’s ability to think. Biological aspects are also crucial. It means that people are able to comprehend themselves and solve their problems. The theory helps people to be self-managers in solving their issues. In this light, a therapeutic relationship is essential between the health practitioner and the client
Another one is the Behaviorist Theory. It emphasis on learning process where individual acquires skills for survival in both present and future. It implies that the communication skills or language used by the caregiver for the survival of the client.
The last theory is Psychodynamic theory. Sigmoid Freud presented the underlying ideas to addresses the inner desires, feelings, and the mind of a child during stages of grow. The feelings drive one to discover the need, satisfaction and pleasure. For instance at the age of 2-4yrs, the child concentrates so much on oral form of communication. According to Freud, the child’s pleasure is in defecation. The theory suggests that an individual lives in two different realms, the internal and external realm. It has an impact on how one communicates in health and social care environment.
